re-assembling a home

24 December, 2019

These people (in the first photo) were the most kind, like the kind of generous you have to blink to make sure you're not dreaming...

I Facebook Marketplaced this couch and when Susanna and I went to pick it up this morning, the family carried the numerous pieces of it down stairs and lifts, and packed and tied them into the ute. Bearing in mind, Sus and I were totally prepared to lift and fumble our own way through this whole shitty exercise - instead we found ourselves watching, and looking at each other a bit gobsmacked at their willingness to help.

Then I received another message when I got to the new house, asking if I needed assistance assembling it and what was my address. Twenty minutes later, they arrived with a drill and were totally happy to do it (they even offered to help me assemble my bed, but I somehow had lost some parts in the move...).

Anyway, moments like these, supportive parents and wonderful friends have made moving somewhat bearable, a bit less painful. Ani Difranco's line of "I owe my life to the people that I love... " keeps ringing in my head.

The months of tentatively planning, weeks of fretting, the hot days and nights of organising and packing, unpacking and washing ... Some sort of end is in sight. Now, the question remains, how does one create a sense of home?
